Player Critique - Hockey 1968 - 1986
Hockey Critique of First XI
1968
FIRST XI CRITIQUE
D. REICHMAN (captain, Matabeleland "A" and Colours). An invaluable
player. He led by example and was undoubtedly the most tenacious player
in the side. His positional play and stopping were immaculate and his
stickwork and distribution more than adequate.
J. MILLS (goalkeeper). He replaced Rosenrode fairly late in the season
and proved keen and reliable.
A. WOOD (full-back; Matabeleland "A"). The most improved player in the
team. His stopping and tackling were always very sound and he displayed
fine aggression.
A. CUDDINGTON (full-back). A sound defensive player, lacking primarily
in speed and to a lesser extent in tenacity.
P. REICHMAN (left-half). He had good games and bad games, but will
undoubtedly develop into a very useful player once he improves his
stickwork.
M. PUSEY (right-half). A good defensive player whose only real drawback
was his lack of speed. He must, however, work to improve his stickwork
and distribution.
C. RAIZON (left-wing). A most useful player in the side. His speed
proved invaluable, but all too often bad stickwork proved his downfall.
He must also develop greater determination when in a tackle and in the
circle.
L. LOMBARD (left-inner). A very enthusiastic and hard-working forward.
Unhappily his lack of control and desire to run on to the ball provided
the opposition with too easy a target. Nevertheless his continued effort
and harassing of the opposition was effectual and a fine example.
H. PARKER (centre-forward; Matabeleland "B"). A vastly improved player
whose stopping and stickwork provided him with the necessary attributes
to score most of the team's goals. He was very fit indeed and set a very
high standard in training sessions.
P. BEST (right-inner). For some reason his play deteriorated over the
season. He certainly had all the necessary ability but he lacked
determination and aggression. Must learn to give it everything he has
got for the entire game, and must work to improve his stickwork.
J. WILLIAMS (right-wing). On his day he was very effective, but all too
often his lack of control prevented him from being the force he should
have been. Again, he simply has to develop more sophisticated stickwork.
Also played for the first XI: Burne and Rosenrode
1970
P.REICHMAN (Captain, Colours-re-award), Centre-Half:
An inspiring captain, who led the team admirably throughout the season.
A fast, attacking player who possesses an extremely effective and
penetrative flick. Represented Matabeleland 'B' at the Rhodesian Trials.
P. HARINGTON (Vice-Captain), Inside Right:
A very fine attacking forward who is equipped with clever stickwork and
a good hard shot at goal. Represented Matabeleland "A" at the Rhodesian
Trials.
I. AULT, Inside Left:
With Harington, he spearheaded the attack. A fast moving, fearless
forward who was very quick to grasp any opportunity that arose.
Represented Matabeleland "B" at the Rhodesian Trials.
C. GRANT, Left Half:
The youngest member of the side who played effectively and consistently
throughout the season. He must make every effort to move to the ball
more quickly. The next few years should see him as a great force in
Milton's hockey. Represented Matabeleland "B" in the Rhodesian Trials.
H. GREEFF, Left Half:
A sound defender and gatherer of the ball, but he must dispose of it
more quickly.
A. HALE, Right Wing:
A fast wing who improved considerably towards the end of the season.
T. HARRIS, Right Back:
His defence generally was sound but his recovery lost most of its effect
owing to his slow pace.
D. JUBBER, Goal-keeper:
Generally, a sound goalie who was not afraid to rush the opposition. A
more definite clearance of the ball would have ensured less harrassing
by the opposition.
A. LA GRANGE, Left Wing:
A fast wing, but he lacks the control to make him really dangerous as an
attacker. He is quick onto the ball off the goal-keeper's pads and his
feature of his play has brought vital goals.
S. McCARTER, Right Half:
A consistent defender who sticks to his wing, recovers well and
possesses a good distribution of the ball.
R .OSWALD, Centre Forward:
He lacks the fire which is an essential feature of every forward's play.
His ball control is good, but be is inclined to be too generous with the
ball at times when a shot at goal would probably be more rewarding.
I. TWEEDIE, Left Back:
A sound defender who has played well the whole season. He is slow on
recovery, but possesses a good hard accurate hit, and therefore clears
the ball well.
1971
C. RAIZON (Captain), Inside Left. An inspiring captain, who led the team
admirably throughout the season. Always pushing himself to the end, he
led by example and maintained a high standard. Chosen for Matabeleland
"B".
I. AULT (Vice-Captain, Colours), Inside Right. A fine attacking player
who started the season on a high note and maintained this standard.
Being very fast to the ball, he was quick to grasp scoring opportunities
that arose. After being called for the Rhodesian trials, he was very
unlucky not to make the final side.
A. HALE (Right Wing). Developed into a very competent forward and
deserved his selection for the Matabeleland "B" school side. Does not go
to look for work, if he is being starved of the ball on the wing.
A. LA GRANGE (Half). The most improved player in the side. All phases of
his game were good, and his covering was particularly effective.
Stickwork improved such a great deal, that the team often found him in
the opponents' circle shooting at goal.
D. JUBBER (Goalkeeper). Began the season very well, but after a few
goal-mouth skirmishes and accidents, his game deteriorated a little. A
player of fine capabilities, he must devote more time to individual
practice to bring out the best in him.
S. CLARK (Left Back). Played consistently throughout the season and
developed with Harris into a fine back combination. Made some silly
mistakes during games from not concentrating and he must recover
quicker.
T. HARRIS (Right Back). The second member of the back combination who
played well throughout the season. Must also recover much quicker on
defence and he must be more aware of what is going on to counteract for
his lack of speed.
A. SZEFTEL (Half). Played with plenty of fire during the season, and
with a little more individual practice he should do well in the future.
Gave of his best and played right to the end of every game.
M. SMUTS (Left Wing). Played regularly in the team after joining us
later on in the season and became one of the more consistent members.
Tends to hod back a little and must learn to look for work.
M. HARINGTON (Half). Has played fairly well during the season, but is
inclined to give up too easily and not to do his fair share of the work.
More individual practice needed.
A. HARRIS (Half). Has worked hard during the season and after switching
to half, proved his versatility. His defence needs tightening up, but
his attacking play is good.
M. GOLDEN (Half). Played intermittently during the season, and always
gave of his best when selected. Stickwork could improve and individual
practice is needed.
1972
A. Hale (Captain, Forward): Did not maintain the high
standard he is capable of, but a very capable player and good captain.
Played in the Matabeleland A Schools team. Bright prospect in senior
hockey as right wing.
T. Harris (Vice Captain, Back): Complete lack of
enthusiasm this season showed in his standard of play. Very inconsistent
and well below the standard that he showed last season, he is capable
of.
A. Szeftel (Centre Half): Played consistently well
during the season and was very unlucky not to make the Matabeleland
Schools team. Has the ability to 'bottle-up' all centre forwards he
played against and 'reads' a game well. Bright prospect for next year.
M. Harington (Right Half): Tremendously improved on
last year's performance and he maintained a high standard throughout the
season. Stickwork and hockey 'brain' good, although he is still inclined
to take his time in getting back to cover.
A. Harris (Forward): Not a very successful season and
lacked the drive needed as a forward. His excellent turn of speed was
hampered by his stickwork and more individual practice is needed.
S. Clark (Back): Played well during the season and what
he lacked in ability he made up in determination. Almost all aspects of
his game improved, but must devote more time to individual practice.
L. Golden (Forward): Played steadily throughout the
season, but stickwork and more drive is needed to be the effective
forward he is capable of being.
B. Norman (Goalkeeper): Developed into a competent
goalkeeper and made some fine saves. Tends to dream while in goals and
must not chase an attacker too far from the goals. Individual practice
will bring out the best in him.
N. Bashall (Half): The baby of the side who has
developed into a fine half player. Inclined to 'fiddle' too much when in
possession, but this is a factor which will disappear when he gains more
experience. Must get back quicker on defence.
A. Oswald (Wing): Started the season well below the
standard he is capable of, but developed into an efficient player. Poor
turn of speed, but good stickwork and passing.
C. Eyre (Wing): Did not maintain the high standard he
is capable of. Stickwork was below standard, but was compensated by the
determination he showed in all games. Must learn to cover back in
defence.
S. Jackson: A good utility player who proved his
ability in a number of different positions. A hard running wing and
solid defender.
Also played:- S. Parkin; R. Louw; P. Whitehead; P. Harrison.

displayed his usual talent in defence as well as attack.
M. Harington (Rhodesian Schools, Colours,
Vice-Captain, right half): He has maintained a high standard throughout
the season. Stickwork and distribution is very good. However, he must be
quicker in getting back to cover. A bright prospect for next year.
K. Gartrell ( Colours, goalkeeper): A
determined and courageous player who has played consistently well
throughout the season. Has made some remarkable saves, ball clearance is
also very good. Bright prospect for next year.
N. Bashall (half, back): It was in the latter
position that he made his mark. Ball distribution and cover defence,
good. A reliable player who has learnt not to 'fiddle'.
G. Erasmus (forward): A reliable and
hardworking inner. Stickwork and ball control, sound. However, he must
learn to fall back quickly in defence. A bright prospect for next year.
I. Fredman (back): Inconsistent during most of
the season. However, what he lacked in ability, he made up in
determination. Must get back quicker in defence.
R. Louw (wing): Started the season well below
standard. However, he has developed into an efficient player. Poor turn
of speed, but good stickwork and reliable passing.
B. Lowen (left half): Has improved
tremendously and has maintained a high standard throughout the season.
Stickwork and passing, reliable. Has a very effective 'reverse stick'
pass. A bright prospect for senior hockey.
S. Parkin (wing): Played consistently well
throughout the season. Stickwork and passing,
reliable. Has a very effective 'reverse stick' pass. A. bright prospect
for senior hockey.
J. Pridgeon (forward): Started the season well
below standard, however, he has developed into a forceful forward who
should do well next year.
S. Jackson (forward): Has played consistently
well throughout the season. Deadly in attack and sound in defence. Good
ball control and reliable passing. A bright prospect for senior hockey.
P. Whitehead (back): Has maintained a
consistently high standard and was unlucky not to make the Matabeleland
Schools team. A dependable back, who has the ability to control his play
'up field' as well. However, must learn to control irrational 'sticks'.

season well below the standard he is capable of, but developed into an
efficient player. Good turn of speed, stickwork and passing.

very good goalkeeper, making some good saves, His most notable
performance was against Plumtree where he faced no less than seventeen
short corners, conceding none. A dedicated player who was most unlucky
not to make Matabeleland Schools.
M. Kennedy: (Team Tab, Forward). Definitely the most
improved player this season. Good in attack and has been responsible for
many goals this season. However he is inclined to "wander" too much,
Must learn to come back in defence when required to do so.

improved on last year's performance and has maintained a high standard
throughout the season. A dynamic forward who always runs and plays hard.

player. Must learn to pass the ball more frequently. Good second weave

A player with a lot of potential who developed into a useful and hard
working wing. Good stickwork and passing. A bright prospect for next
year.
T. Lange (Matabeleland 1B1, Forward)

was always quick to see a gap and make the most of it. A strong forward

Matabeleland 'B' Schools side. A strong player who started off the

A good tackler who reads the game well. However, he must learn not to
worry about his game. Will do well next year.
C. Wright - Left Half. An erratic player who at times
played extremely well arid on other occasions was inclined to relax, and
as a result was unable to keep up with the game. A player with ability
who must concentrate all the time. Will do well with hard work.
Also played:- C.Chappell, G.Edwards, D.Oswald, P.van Niekerk,
D.Wallace.
1980
W. Smith Captain. Centre Half. He has played for both
Matabeleland 'B' and Zimbabwe 'B' schoolboys sides and gained school
colours. He has been a good player for the side but perhaps his biggest
fault is that of going too far forward too often. He has maintained a
high standard of tackling.
G. Hardman Vice-Captain. Centre Forward. Has played for
both Matabeleland 'A' and Zimbabwe 'A' schoolboys sides and has gained
school colours. He has proved himself to be a player of high calibre and

the season badly, yet came back tremendously in some of the later games

Schools team. He is a good player who uses his natural skill to good
advantage.

neglects to feed his wings at times, though.

and has proved himself to be valuable in the forward line. He has good
skills and must continue to develop them. Laziness is at times his
biggest fault.

improved throughout the season. He is sometimes slow in clearing the
ball. When beating the attacking player to the ball he must learn to
bring the ball back and gain possession before clearing it.
E. van Ryneveld Half. He has played a number of games
this season and needs to develop his aggression for attack. He should do
well next season.
S. Williams Inner, A player who has potential. He needs

Also played:- N. Dempsey, V. Nothnagel, J. Knight.
1981
G. Hardman: Captain Left Inner. Matabeleland 'A' and
Zimbabwe Schools 1980/81 School Colours 1980/8'1. An outstanding player,

and his basics were outstanding. He got through a tremendous amount of
work both on attack and tackling back in defence. Most
unfortunate not to make Zimbabwe Schools.

of his game was his ability to clear so hard and accurately. Always gave
1 00% effort and should do well in Senior Hockey.
V. Nothnagel: Half. Team Tab New award. Although still
a youngster he indicated that he is likely to have a good future in the
game. He always worked hard and I am sure that next season he will see
the full benefit of the experience gained this year.
D. Oswald: Centre Half. Matabeleland 'B' 1980/81.
School Colours 1980. Steady without being spectacular. He was
particularly noticeable for his good cover but at times his
distribution of the ball lacked imagination.
M. Rachman: Goalkeeper. Matabeleland 'A' 1981, School
Colours 1981. He took his job seriously and must be commended for
working so hard during the season. The outstanding feature of his game
was his ability to read back game so well. He should go far in hockey.
S. Rachman: Wing. Team Tab New Award. What he lacked in
basic skill he certainly made up for in effort and determination. An
intelligent player who was always looking for the goal.
B. Sellers: Inner/Wing. Matabeleland 'A' and 'B' 1981.
Team Tab re-award. A strong player who always tried hard, scored some
good goals but often tended to overdo his stickwork, when he should have
used a more forceful and intelligent approach.
G. Stephens: Centre Forward. Team Tab New Award. Basics
good although he must continue to show more aggression and think in
terms of being more involved in attack. I am sure he will perform very
well next year.
P. van Niekerk: Left Back. Team Tab Re-award. A strong
calm player who was particularly noticeable for his good cover work. He
showed a considerable flair in attack and will undoubtedly do well in
the future.

linked well with the rest of the forwards and got through a lot of work.

an outstanding captain with great organising ability and enthusiasm.
Played some outstanding games as forward having acquired greater
aggression.
V. Nothnagel - Right Back. Was selected for
Matabeleland 'B' for the second year. Held the defence together against
all odds, using his natural talent to its best ability. However, he
tended to come too far up at times.
D. Gammon - Right Inner. Selected for Matabeleland 'B'
and reserve for the 'A' side. At times he was slow in getting back to
defend but his attacking was good and he combined well at times with his
wing.
D. Forrest- Centre Half. Selected for
Matabeleland 'B'. He produced some excellent defensive play but at times
faded. He should do well.
G. Wallace - Right Half. Was unlucky not to be selected
for a Matabeleland side, His defence and cover was very good but
occasionally he came too far forward and unsettled the forwards. He has
natural potential and will do well.
S. Gilhooley - Goalkeeper. Extremely unlucky not to
have been selected for Matabeleland 'B'. He produced some incredible
saves and always played well. However, he must learn to control his
temperament and he will do well if he keeps it up.
N. Dempsey - Left Inner. Must learn to control the ball
when it is close to him and when he is under pressure. He had some
fantastically fast breaks where he made full use of his speed. A good
player who must continue to play and can do well.
R. Scott - Left Half. Tended to mark his wing too
closely, thus leaving a gap in the defence. His clearance from the
circle was good and he is a talented player.
H. Ziemkendorf - Back. He produced some fine play and
was always keen. He must watch his obstruction (and his feet). He used
his size well and tackled well. With training he will produce good
hockey.
P. Jeyrajah - Back. His defence was sound and he
intercepted the ball well. However, he needs to be a little more
aggressive and then his capability of producing good hockey will mature.
When under pressure he was always calm.
W. McDowall - Left Wing. A youngster in the side who
coped admirably with a difficult position. He must learn to be more
aggressive and anticipate the play. His natural agility and fine
stickwork will serve him well. He has the potential to be a great
player.
D. Stephens - Right Wing. The baby of the team in both
age and size, which meant he could not quite keep up with a fast game.
He, too, must become more aggressive but this will come. His crossing of
the ball was excellent and his perception good. He will do very well in
the future.
Also Played - R. Edwards, P. Maugi.
1984
H Ziemkendorf - Centre Half. Captain Milton 1st XI and
Captain Matabeleland Schools 'B' team. A very thoughtful player who was

well.

played well but he must learn to be more enthusiastic and to concentrate
on his game.

Played a very confident game and was very consistent, tackling and
clearing well from the circle. A player who was highly depended on.
I Forrest - Right Back. He played well as back, but he
must learn not to dribble with the ball too much, especially when under
pressure.
P Maugi - Right Half. A very useful right half who has
improved his hockey considerably from 1983. Selected for Matabeleland
·s· side - what about fitness?
R Elston - Left Half. He played an awkward position
very well. His hockey, both attacking and defensive. was always good,
especially under pressure.
F Batty- Left Wing. A fast and competent wing who
played well during the season. A little more determination and
aggressiveness should help his game in future years.
W McDowell - Left Inner. A very good player who was
selected for Matabeleland ·s· side. His stick work was the best in the
team, but he must learn not to be frightened of dribbling with the ball
all the way to the goals. On many an occasion he should have kept the
ball and gone for the goals alone - he must learn to be more aggressive
in his game.
R Edwards - At the beginning of the season he played
centre forward but his true hockey potential was shown when he played
Right Wing. A fast wing who was very useful - he must learn to keep
control of the ball for a longer time to ensure success.
D Stephens - Right Inner. A good player who was
selected for Matabeleland ·s· team. He played well throughout the season
and thought when attacking - he must however learn to use his other four

or eight games of the season. A very determined player who will do well
in future years.

needs confidence.
F Jensen - An attacking and aggressive wing who was
unfortunate with injuries.

in the team. He must learn to be more aggressive.

confident and promising goalkeeper, who will do well in the future

be able to attack as well as defend. His only weakness was not marking
his wing tightly enough. He will however, be an asset to hockey in
future years.

improved his game considerably. He always appeared calm during defence
and was unlucky not to be selected for Matabeleland.

the side. He has the ability to do well, but did not live up to
expectations this season.
S Miller-Cranko - Left Wing. Came into the team for the
last 8 games. A very determined player who will do well in future years.
1986

for the team. He will do well in the future if he keeps up his hard
training. He also captained the Matabeleland A Schools side, represented
