Attached please find three photos of Milton HIgh School taken by myself
in 1952, when the schools photographic club introduced me to
photography.
I live in Harare and for the past 32 years have been a professional
photographer. I am aged 77 years.
The photograph of the school front fascing Selbourne Avenue was the very
first photograph that I ever processed and still have it after a lapse
of 60 years.
Of note is that the front of Charter House facing the quadrangle does
not have the large bushy trees of today. The front facing Selbourne
Avenue is not boarded up as it is today.
The quadrangle in 1952 was devoid of buildings and in the centre was
solitary tree upon which hung a short piece of railway line. It was
struck with a small iron rod to mark the begining and ending of class
periods. I believe that this has now been replaced by some electronic
device.
I attended Milton School from 1949 to 1952.
Sincerely
PS: I am curios to know when Putt Jackson retired from Milton School. He
was deputy-head for many years and was regarded as part of the
furniture.

'Milton Boys High School' 1929/30 - 1934/35
I have recently discovered that my grandfather Thomas Matthew Meldrum
Alexander attended Milton Boys High School between 1929/30 through
1934/35 and was further placed for receiving the ‘Alfred Beit’ Bursary
at the end of his studies, which sadly he had to turn down. I was
wanting to know if you had any listings of students/bursary’s during
this time period or possible school photographs in your archives?
I do appreciate this may be a very forward request, but I am currently
undertaking the Alexander family genealogy and would appreciate any
feedback you may have.
Kind regards,
Matthew Alexander

My Geography teacher was Ms Barbara Suttle and I did OK in Geography and
Math but made out OK to in few other subjects also.
I moved about a bit but most of the time was in Zimbabwe, Johannesburg,
Cape Town, South Africa, England, then the United States
of America. I was born in 1945 and left Milton high school on Townsend
road, Bulawayo in about 1962, now 68 and enjoyed my time attending
Milton.

I just wanted to send this but unfortunately my brother Barry Norman
Alexander Smart has passed away. Barry is sitting in the front row first
on the left. He was born in Aug 1957 and went to Milton in 1970 and or
1971. I notice you do not have a photo for this year, I do not know
which house he was in but maybe the other boys in the photo will know.
Sorry it’s in such bad condition but you could add it to your archives
and I am sure someone will recognize themselves
Kind regards
June McIntyre

Hi All, for those who remember David "Tiger" Wright - he now lives in
semi-retirement in Tasmania but still very involved in teaching and
helping a new high school in Botswana. You may recall he was also a
poet. He recently sent me an email which included the following:
"My first book, 'Footpaths of Africa Never Run Straight' has just been
published. It was quite a thrill to see it actually in print.
All details can be found on:
http://sbpra.com/davidhmwright Some
other former students have been interested to find out what made their
old teacher tick. Other literary efforts are in the pipeline but getting
things published is tough in these hard times."
cheers

Congratulations on your website - it does the school proud! The school
itself is pretty hard to find though - would you by any chance have
contact details - specifically telephone details My Grandfather and my
brother both attended the school.

Good day, First off thanks to everyone for all the inputs into the
Milton web pages. It is very impressive. Once again thanks to the people
who have
gone to this trouble to put these splendid pages together. It is very
impressive and appreciated. By the way I have also recently been in
touch with
Bernie Bitter here in Joburg. He is a minister at the Union Church in
Northcliff.
Just a thought: so many young women passed through the 6th form and
ended up with top scholarships as a result. It would be nice to see
their names up there too with ack to their parent schools of course.
